Electrical safety toolbox talk
Most electrical incidents on construction sites are not electricians working on panels. They are people working near something live, or plugging into temporary power that nobody protected.
Run the talk
- Know what is live near you before you start. Proximity is the hazard, not just contact.
- Every temporary receptacle you plug into should be protected. If you do not know whether it is, find out before you use it.
- When something is deenergized for work, it gets tagged — at every point it could be energized from. Tags mean people, not just paperwork.
- Who is allowed to remove a tag on this site? If you do not know who hung it, it stays hung — that is our rule, and it is a good one.
- Where is the arc-flash assessment for today's work? Good practice — NFPA 70E — is to assess before the work starts, not during it.
Ask the crew
- What is energized within reach of where you are working today?
- Which receptacles on this site are protected, and how do you know?
- If you found an untagged deenergized panel, what would you do?
Check before you leave the huddle
- Identify energized circuits near today's work and confirm the approach controls.
- Confirm ground-fault protection on the temporary receptacles in use.
- Confirm tags are in place at every point of possible energisation.
