Ladder safety toolbox talk
Ladders are the most-used piece of access equipment on most sites and the least-inspected. Most ladder incidents come down to three things: the ladder was damaged before anyone climbed it, it was not long enough for the landing, or it was the wrong ladder to have near live electrical work.
Run the talk
- Who inspected the ladders on this site, and when? Inspection is a named duty, not something that happens when someone notices a problem.
- A ladder with a structural defect comes out of service. Not 'gets used carefully' — out of service, and marked so nobody else grabs it.
- When you climb to a landing, the side rails have to reach well above it — or, where the ladder cannot be long enough, tied off at the top with something to hold while you get on and off.
- Fiberglass, not aluminum, anywhere the ladder or the person on it could reach live electrical equipment.
- Check the footing before you climb, every time. The ladder that was solid this morning may be standing on this afternoon's mud.

- Who here has used a ladder on this site today that they did not inspect first?
- If you found a cracked rail right now, where would you put that ladder and who would you tell?
- Which ladders on this job are we allowed to use near the panel work?
Check before you leave the huddle
- Walk the ladders on site and look at rails, rungs, feet and hardware.
- Confirm the access ladders extend far enough above their landings, or are tied off with a grab point.
- Confirm any ladder near energized equipment is nonconductive.
